Republicans Enter a Shadow Campaign to Sew Up Delegates

With more than half the states having now held their nominating contests, Donald J. Trump and Senator Ted Cruz are quietly directing their attention to a second, shadow election campaign — one that is out of sight, little understood but absolutely critical if Republicans arrive at their national convention with Mr. Trump short of a majority of delegates.

With only two non-Trump candidates remaining in what began as 17 person Republican field, Ted Cruz is giving fellow survivor John Kasich what amounts to be the silent treatment

The strategy reflects the campaign’s view that the Ohio Governor is a distraction in what they see as a two-man race between Trump and Cruz. The Texas Senator has no plans to go after Kasich’s record on issues such has gun control, Ohio’s Medicaid expansion, or immigration.

Donald Trump now has more than half of the delegates he needs to get the Republican nomination. But that isn’t stopping his opponents from doing everything they can to stop him.

John Kasich took home his winner-take-all state of Ohio, which gets the party closer to a contested convention.

Clinton, Trump Have Very, Very Good Nights

Last night’s results aren’t quite complete, with recounts possible in Missouri on both the Democratic and Republican sides, but the takeaway this morning seems to be that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had an excellent night and businessman Donald Trump did very well also. Donald Trump celebrated a string of primary wins at his Mar-a-Lago resort on Tuesday in a palatial room of white paint, gold detailing, and crystal chandeliers that looked ready for an imperial coronation.

The Stop Trump movement’s last realistic hope is now a contested convention in Cleveland

Donald Trump won big and continues his march toward the Republican nomination. He won at least three, and possibly four, of Tuesday’s contests. (That’s not counting the Northern Marianas islands, where he won all the available delegates.) Realistically, the only way he can be stopped now is at the convention in Cleveland in July. Marco Rubio dropped out after losing his home state by 19 points. John Kasich survived by winning all 66 delegates from his home state, but it’s not clear he’ll be able to win any others. Ted Cruz over-performed and solidified his status as the main alternative to the polarizing front-runner.
