Front-runners Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump dominated one of the biggest days of the 2016 presidential race so far. Trump overcame controversy about the violent clashes that have marked his rallies this week and Clinton muted the criticism over her history on trade deals with big wins in Ohio and Illinois over Bernie Sanders.
John Kasich never won the conservative vote in any state. He never even finished second. Even in New Hampshire, where he beat Ted Cruz statewide, Kasich never beat Cruz among the conservative vote.
In Ohio, however, Kasich carried the “conservative” bloc with 40 percent. Among the “very conservative” third of the electorate, Kasich beat Ted Cruz. Kasich also won the Evangelical vote, doubling Cruz’s percentage.

Ted Cruz over-performed and solidified his status as the main alternative to the polarizing front-runner.
