A couple weeks ago, one could see the stark contrast and difficult decision facing the Republican Party in the coming year. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz was on a stage at Liberty University in Virginia, formally announcing his candidacy in front of 10,000 students at a well-orchestrated tent revival of sorts. Up in New Hampshire at about the same moment, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who has not announced his candidacy for president but seems to be getting closer and closer to doing so, was learning about the latest in 3-D printing research.

Speaking to a crowd at the Detroit Economic Club at the Cobo Center in Michigan Monday, the Republican lawmaker said he is “seriously considering” a run for president.

“If it makes sense, I will do it,” he replied to a question asked from the audience after his speech. “You are who you are … I am not going to lay awake at night if people don’t like me.”

Dining with a group of influential pro-growth conservatives at the Four Seasons restaurant in Manhattan on Wednesday — economists Larry Kudlow, Arthur Laffer, and Stephen Moore, Fox News hosts Bill Hemmer and John Stossel, and Gristedes Foods founder John Catsimatidis were all in attendance — Kasich voiced his support for Medicaid and for renewing a spirit of bipartisanship within the Republican party.

Kasich, a former nine-term congressman who won a resounding reelection victory in November, is eyeing a presidential bid but, at the dinner’s close, there was little appetite for a Kasich presidency among those who’d assembled to hear him.

“It was sort of amazing, right?”

Gov. John Kasich beamed, basked, hammed. Whatever you’d call it, he’d had a great day back on the campaign trail.

“When I came here the last time, I couldn’t get anyone to pay attention, and now it’s, like, so totally different,” he told reporters. “You come to something like this and see how people react, and it’s pretty positive. It really does have an impact on the way you think.”
